Vernoncrest Golf Club

President’s Message………

The forming of the Vernoncrest Golf Club composed of predominantly African American women represented “A Dream Come True” in July 1947, When Mrs. Mae Crowder organized along with nine other enthusiastic female golfers Vernondale Golf Club.  This group of ladies, with Mrs. Crowder as Founder and President, became the first African American golf club on the west coast.  Later, in 1953 the club would become know as Vernoncrest Golf Club. When the club was formed the dream was to promote the game of golf for black women.   We are proud of our legacy and our association with many fine women golfers including the late great Maggie Hathaway.  We are also privileged and honored to have in our midst today a golfer who has been a member of our club for over 30 years, Devoria Crawford.

The club is dedicated to all elements of the sport of golf including; adhering to the rules of golf, supporting the spirit of competition, sportsmanship and wholesome fun in general.  The ladies of Vernoncrest have continually and successfully promoted outstanding invitational tournaments for the enjoyment of our many golfing friends. 

A special part of the club’s program has been to encourage and support Junior Golf, Scholarships, and the Women in Golf programs.  Our active participation and financial contributions to these programs has made us a leader in the Los Angeles golfing community.

It is with great pride and humility that I continue a legacy established over 60 years ago to promote golf for women of all playing levels in addition to promoting academic excellence for our children and junior golf opportunities for posterity………
